Hobby Update - Wheels Up

Back on. Green stuff for gaps after I rebuilt after yesterdays surgery. Little extra green stuff makes some extra metal brackets.

Another angle.

Little glue for a wheel.

Set for the night.

Doom wheel bit will become an extra connection point.

Trying to decide if I can work on this project off site on friday. Guess we'll see how quickly it progresses.

Adepticon – It’s How You Use It AM– Round 2 – Jake Murphy – Dark Elves

This is my second time playing Jake.  The last time we played it was the last round of North Star, and the last game either of us would have with the old Dark Elf book.  Jake, already a dedicated Dark Elf player hadn’t gone to another army following North Star, meanwhile, this was only my third game with the new Dark Elves.  Based on how close we had been last time I know I was in for a good match.

Unfortunately for Jake, he and I had hung out the night before (that’s not the unfortunate part).  We had a beer (still not unfortunate) and talked about our lists (here we go…).  Jake had shared with me a little trick he had put into his list, obsidian blade on his death hag.  I had joked that I wouldn’t run my empire list in case I ran into him.  Honestly, I was already planning on running the dark elves first at that point, but I still felt bad.  I can’t recall if I had shared anything about my characters with him, but there wasn’t much to guess and nothing as key as ignoring armor.

Terrain:  All forests are mysterious.
My forest is a blood forest and his in venom.

Deployment: Battleline

Special Rules
Any core unit in the box gains stubborn (order), armor piercing (destruction) or hatred (non-aligned).  Obviously Armor Piercing for both of us.

Bonus Points
+1 for each enemy wizard destroyed up to a maximum of +2 points.  Any model that can channel will count (if ability to channel isn’t due to magic item)
+1 for each banner in your opponent’s deployment zone to a maximum of +3 points.
(Plus 1-3-5 Points for 1-2-3 Terrain pieces under control.)

The List
Death Hag, Obsidian Blade

20 Witch Elves, full command, standard of discipline
5 Dark Riders, banner, xbows, shield
5 Dark Riders, banner, xbows, shield

15 Executioners, full command
Reaper Bolt Thrower
Reaper Bolt Thrower

Deployment
Jake and I both spread out armies out.  Jake flanked his army with his dark riders and flanked his hill with the ranked units.  His bolt throwers each went into a terrain piece, even if they couldn’t claim.

I put my bunker down across from his block units.

I choose not to vanguard on the left in case I get first turn.  Both Jake’s unit and my right unit start the fast cavalry dance.

Jake gets the first turn, something that was key in our last game and every fast army pairing with my fast army (I got first versus Ryan Nicol at 2013 WaaaghPACA and against Ben Cone at 2014 WaaaghPACA.  I even got first versus Jake at 2013 Northstar).

Turn 1 – Dark Elves (Jake)
Jake moves strong into position.  His shooting kills 1 dark rider on the right and 3 warlocks.

Turn 1 – Dark Elves (Me)
I try to counter on the right, and charge my 4 dark riders into his 5 dark riders hoping my +S will see me through.  Unfortunately I lose 1 to the stand and shoot.  I hold and make it into combat.

Hoping to press my magic superiority, I roll a mighty 2/1 magic phase (actually really nice given no wizard on his side).  I 2D soul blight on the left dark riders.

In shooting I kill 4 off the weakened unit.

In the combat Jake makes all his 5+ armor saves and I can’t make any of my 4+.  I lose my unit.

Turn 2 – Dark Elves (Jake)
Jake is now in the lead, continues to jockey for position.  His shooting is ineffective this turn.

Turn 2 – Dark Elves (Me)
I do the dance and go onto magic where I pick up an 8/5 magic phase.  I roll a 3D soulblight on the executioners, which he fails to dispel.  I follow up with a 4D doom bolt, rolling a triple and killing 10 off the unit.

My shooting kills the off the left dark rider unit and leaves 1 executioner.  I also kill 2 witches.

Turn 3 – Dark Elves (Jake)
The witches unit, now looking a little alone attempts to charge a bolt thrower but fails.  Jake’s shooting only kills 1 dark rider.

Turn 3 – Dark Elves (Me)
I wanted my warlocks in a position to cast their doom bolt at the executioner, and couldn’t manage to do both that and set up for a witch charge, so I declared a charge on the executioner.  Jake fled and I failed my charge.

For magic I pick up a 6/4 magic phase and start with a 3D soulblight on the witches hoping to draw his dice (after all lots of shooting at witches is bad, right?).  Jake chooses to let it go and then dispels my 3D soulblight at the last executioner.

My shooting then kills 11 witches.

Turn 4 – Dark Elves (Jake)
The witches successfully charge the bolt thrower.  The executioner make their snakes and rally.

His shooting kills 1 doom fire warlock.

The bolt thrower crew kills 2 witches before dying.  The witches run off the table.

Turn 4 – Dark Elves (Me)
With not much on the table I try to set up for later turns.  A 4/3 magic phase has me irresistibly casting doom bolt to pick up the last executioner.  It costs me 3 doom fire warlocks.

My shooting kills 2 dark riders, which panic and pass through the pyramid, losing 1 more to dangerous terrain.

Turn 5 – Dark Elves (Jake)
The dark riders rally and hide to claim terrain.  Shooting kills 2 of my dark riders.

Turn 5 – Dark Elves (Me)
Not wanting to give up my terrain I begin to limit my movement.  My general does charge out of the unit to try to pic up a bolt thrower.  He has to survive one single bolt thrower shot, but will prevent my doom fire warlocks from losing the terrain piece they are claiming should they be forced to eat 2 bolt throwers.

I skip my magic phase as it wouldn’t help and I cant afford a miscast.  My general kills the bolt thrower.

Turn 6 – Dark Elves (Jake)
The witches charge and kill a bolt thrower.  The crew isn’t able to clean up the unit.  My general gets shot but only takes 2 wounds from Jake’s bolt thower.

Turn 6 – Dark Elves (Me)
Nothing to do so I skip my turn, just claiming objectives.

Hobby Update - Mechanical Monster

This picture shows how much I need to reduce the length. The base width size is the same. I expect its likely the head may end up hanging over.

Wonderful doom wheel and warplightening bits.

Some surgery.

Some plastic card for the frame.

Mounted to start holding things in place.

Little more surgery.

Putting some parts back together. Looks like it will need a little green stuff and wire work. Where should I make that hose go?

Mock together with the wheels set in. Once its dry ill try to put the wheels in. I have a feeling that ill be assembling this one before painting. It should be open enough for that to work.

Adepticon – It’s How You Use It AM – Round 1 – Ian Botts – Warriors of Chaos (Nurgle)

Ian is a nice guy, originally from England but immediately from Boston.  His wife was also present at the convention.  I believe she played in the doubles event and maybe another, but she slept through our event.  That was probably for the best, as I knew from walking up to the table that this was going to be a rough game for Ian.  My speedy list only gets better at lower points, as there is less to cover the table and Ian really didn’t have any way of reaching out and touching me.

Terrain:  All forests are mysterious.
Mine rolls Fungi and his rolls Blood.

Deployment: Dawn Attack

Special Rules
During Game Turn 1, each player will roll 3D6 at the beginning of their turn.  Their units may see the result x 3 inches for anything requiring Line of Sight.

Victory Condition
Most Core units inside the Box (18” square centered on the table).  If no core units in box, use normal 100 point standard.

Bonus Points
+1 For each unit with a banner inside (even partially) the box at the end of the game, up to a maximum of +3.
+1 for each enemy Core unit destroyed or fled off the field, but to a maximum of +2 points.
(Plus 1-3-5 Points for 1-2-3 Terrain pieces under control.)

My focus for the game would be on the warrior unit.  If I took that out, I would reach my  one bonus point.  Beyond that I didn’t need to deny him his bonus for being in the terrain, and with only the one core unit I couldn’t lose the game (though Ian could force it to go to points if I didn’t get a unit into the center).

The List
Festus

15 Warriors of Chaos of Nurgle, full command, standard of discipline

15 Chosen of Nurgle, full command
Chaos Warshrine, mark of nurgle

I found it interesting that even with the Warshrine, Ian hadn’t brought a daemon price or spawn model.  Summoning a prince at 1000 points would have been awesome for him in any game.  Ian indicated they weren’t painted to his standard and so he hadn’t brought them.

Magic
For spells Festus would pick up a breath weapon and giving his unit poison.

Deployment
We roll and I get to deploy first.  I spread my army out wide, knowing that my speed and vanguard will get me where ever I need to be.  Ian puts a unit on each side of the box, with the warshrine and festus joining the chosen.  I’m sure his goal is to try to pinch me out of the box, while keeping his warriors alive.

We roll off and I pick up the first turn.  Not great for me, as last turn box grab would mean I wouldn’t actually have to interact to get a win without bonus (which makes for a silly game).

The chosen pick up +1S to start the game.

Turn 1 – Dark Elves
I move up, getting ready to focus on the warriors.

I roll a 7/6 magic phase, and fail a 2D soul blight on the warriors.

Shooting only kills 2 guys… ugh.

Turn 1 – Warriors of Chaos
The warriors go to swift reform and reveal their standard of discipline.

Ian rolls a 6/5 magic phase.  He 6D into the warshrine and gives both the champion and Festus
+1WS.

Turn 2 – Dark Elves
Move movement.

A 9/6 magic phase gives me a 3D SB on the warriors which Ian fails to dispel.  I then fail a 6D large DB on the warriors.

My shooting kills 4 more warriors and Ian passes panic.

Turn 2 – Warriors of Chaos
The warriors, now surrounded, choose not to take the long change that would put them in the worst position.  They then choose the best facing given that they are going to get a flank or rear next turn.

A 7/6 magic phase sees Festus getting +1A.

Turn 3 – Dark Elves
I charge the flank of the warriors.  Everything that isn’t needed for support moves to begin shooting the chosen.

A 9/5 magic phase has me irresistibly casting soulblight.  I pass my ward saves.

Even with the –T, my shooting only manages to kill 1 chosen.  Yay BSB shooting.

His champion challenges and my BSB accepts.  I kill and put 2 overkill on.  My general then kills 2 more (he makes 6s).  I lose 1 doom fire warlock.  He loses by 6, breaks and gets run down.

Turn 3 – Warriors of Chaos
Luckily for me the doom fire warlocks had overrun just short of risking a chosen charge.

A 4/2 magic phase gives champ +1A

Turn 4 – Dark Elves
I move up my doom fire warlocks in an attempt to turn the chosen.  Ian had blocked them so that they could see the entire center.  I could afford to lose the entire unit if it means I could sneak my 2 core units into the center.  It would mean a loss by points but win by overriding objective.

I roll a 12/6 magic phase.  6D irresistible soulblight costs me 2 doom fire warlocks.  I then 6D irresistible big doom bolt at the warshrine which does 3 wounds and costs me 2 more doom fire warlocks.

In shooting the first dark rider unit kills off the warshrine while the rest of my shooting doesn’t do anything.

Turn 4 – Warriors of Chaos
Managing to find an angle to cast his breath weapon that doesn’t involve turning away from the box, Ian holds his unit steady.

An 8/5 magic phase has me failing to dispel his stream, which does a wound to the BSB and kills another doom fire warlock.  He then poisons up in case I charge.

Turn 5 – Dark Elves
I don’t charge.

A 4/3 magic phase has a soul blight go off.  Shooting kills 5 chosen and the unit panics, running away from the box.

Turn 5 – Warriors of Chaos
While Ian rallies, he is now to far back to charge the back edge of the box on turn 6, so we wrap the game up with the understanding that I sneak in and take the win.

Game was fast, but didn’t yield me full points as Ian was missing some of things I needed.
