Davis Doubles - Arrival

This event was being held at Bizarro World in Davis.  This shop was my original home shop growingup, though it has moved locations more than a few times.  This new location is the largest of thevarious locations over the years.  Inaddition to be a large comic shop, the site also hosts some board games, toysand other items.  In the back half of theshop, Bizarro World also hosts Davis’ last movie rental selection.  That is where we were set up.  6 or 7 tightly packed table.  It wasn’t that uncomfortable, justtight.  We got an 8 team turn out, 16people, including the TO and a partner. Personally, I think this was the perfect number.  After 8 I would rather have a huge jump.  10-20 is just an awkward number.  It’s too small to be a big event, but justlarge enough to prevent a true winner.

While this was a doubles event, it didn’t really feel like one.  From what I observed Sean and I were the onlyteam that had integrated their lists into one list and the only ones who playedlike one player versus two players each playing their own contingent.

This event allowed for 2.5 hours for two teams of 2500 points.  Only in the last game did we get past turn3.  I never felt that Sean or I playedslow, though it was commented that because we just had lots to do we took morethan our normal time.  I feel that weweren’t the entire cause of the delay.  Ialmost wish that we were required to use chess clocks at events.  Not to limit turn length, but to discouragean excessive use of time when not needed.

For this event we were playing by Adepticon standards, so no lords and2400 points.  Everyone else was allowedlords and was playing at 2500 points.
